Frequently asked

Before you ask

The things new players hit most often.

Windows says “Windows protected your PC”. Is it safe?

That is Microsoft Defender SmartScreen reacting to an unsigned installer. D2RUST is not code-signed yet, so Windows has no publisher reputation to check. The build is compiled from the public source and published on the official download service.

Click More info, then Run anyway. Only run an installer you downloaded from this website or the official GitHub repository. If you would rather not bypass the warning, you can build both the launcher and the game yourself from source.

Where do I get Diablo II: Lord of Destruction?

You need your own, legally owned copy of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, version 1.14d. Use your existing CD or installer, or buy the game from Blizzard.

D2RUST cannot provide the game, its files, or links to unofficial downloads. The project ships only its own code; your game files stay on your machine.

Does D2RUST modify my Diablo II files?

No. D2RUST reads the Diablo II game files on your PC and does not modify your original installation. Saves and settings live in Documents\D2RUST.

Where are my characters and settings?

Everything D2RUST writes lives in Documents\D2RUST: characters in saves\, plus settings.toml and controls.toml. Nothing is written into the game folder.

Original Diablo II .d2s saves can be imported. Copy the save first, because the game writes back to the file it loaded.

Where are the crash logs?

In Documents\D2RUST\logs:

  • crash.log — the panic or error, a backtrace, the command line, and the last steps before the crash.
  • game.log — everything the game printed during that run.
  • game.prev.log — the previous run.

Logs are overwritten by later runs, so copy them before you relaunch. If the folder cannot be written, the crash log is saved as D2RUST-crash.log next to D2RUST-Game.exe.

How do updates work?

The launcher downloads and updates the game for you when a newer build is published. Your saves and settings are kept.

You do not need to reinstall.

Can I play online?

Not yet. Beta 0.1 is single player. Online multiplayer is the next milestone. The game is already built around an authoritative server — even single player runs as a local one — so the foundation is in place.

Can I play Median XL, Project Diablo 2 or other mods?

Not in beta 0.1. Launcher channels and data-layer mod support are planned, but they are not playable yet. When a mod channel is ready, it will be announced on Discord and the project site.

Which version of Diablo II do I need?

Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, version 1.14d, installed on your PC. D2RUST does not include the game.
